Club Reliability Trials affected by bad weather

Reliability Trials are challenging rides run over a set route with a time limit.

Sunday Feb 19th, the day of the Congleton Cycling Club 100 mile reliability trial dawned cold and bright. There had been some overnight rain which fell on frozen ground. Ice was a problem. There were two groups of riders, an 8 hour group started at 8 a.m and a 7 hour group at 9 a.m.
The cold kept most at home, but four riders Wayne Powell, Mark Tilstone, Stephen Kane and Bob Norton set off first. By the time they got to Barthomley on the outward route they were getting adept at cycling on ice. This prompted a phone call to the second group advising they keep to main roads en route to Eccleshall which was the first check point. Thus the five riders in the seven hour group, Denise Hurst, Peter Smith, Brendan McLaughlin, Darren Nicholls and Jamie Willets took a different route to the first group. By Eccleshall after a deviation from the route themselves, the 8 hour group were pleased to get a cup of tea and a bun from Peter Nelson and Georgina Norton who were support crew
for the day. There was snow on the ground, and the minor roads were still treacherous, so both groups made their way to Prees Heath for the lunch stop by variations of main road route. After lunch the original route in the lanes was resumed, although group one had to add a couple of extra excursions to make up the distance lost in the morning. Everyone arrived back safely with distances of 102 and 106 miles completed respectively. We plan to repeat the event again later in the year, in better conditions.

Sunday March 4th was the day for the clubs hilly reliability trial. This fits just about as many hills into 33 miles as is possible.  The route, which can be found on the clubs website, climbs over 4000 feet with ascents of Cloudside, Bearda Hill (Dane Bridge), Wincle, Wildboarclough, Macclesfield Forest, Allgreave and back over Cloudside via Wood Treatment. Over the higher ground it fell as sleet and snow. Six club riders took part Stephen Kane, Wayne Powell, Stephen Jackson, Darren Nicholls, Tony Elliot and Bob Norton started, together with 6 Leek cyclists Club riders. Only Stephen Jackson and Chris Dale completed the ride – so Well Done!!

The weekend of the 25th and 26th of Feb saw club members out on two club runs. On the Saturday Georgina Norton led a group of seven on the monthly Saturday run. Bev Hambleton, Peter Nelson, Kelvin Milward, Bob Banner, David McVitie and Bob Norton enjoyed a 27 mile ride to Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre café via Middlewich and Goostrey, returning via Lower Withington and Swettenham. Sunday was the regular club run led this time by Bob Norton with Georgina, Stephen Kane and David Hurst for company. The
destination was the Priest House café in Audlem. The group followed an interesting route in the lanes passing through Alsager, Audley, Madeley  Aston, Mucklestone and Norton in Hales for well earned refreshment. The return route was via Hatherton, Wybunbury, Betley, Barthomley, Alsager and Rode Heath. The distance was about 65 miles.

Also on Sunday 26th, Denise Hurst completed her first 200 km (125 mile)
Audax ride of the year from Poynton to Newport (Shrops) and back.
