Cheshire Club Run and
AUDAX in North Wales
Last
Sunday (26th), four members formed the Club Run to Dones Green Café
near Acton Bridge. Karl Austin was the sole male and was outnumbered by the
three ladies: Linda Austin, Georgina Norton and Mary Renshaw. The Cheshire lanes through Bate Mill,
Knutsford and Great Budworth were somewhat damp – even flooded in sections - after
heavy overnight rain and the showers during the ride tested the waterproofing
but did not dampen the spirits of the riders. The return through Whitegate and
the Salt Mines to Sandbach was aided by a tailwind and warm temperature.
Also, last
Sunday, Club Members Denise Hurst and Bob Norton were among the 50 or so riders
on the Horseshoe Audax organised by the Weaver Valley C.C. This was a 200 km
(125 mile) circuit starting and finishing in Holmes Chapel. The Saturday
overnight rain cleared away just in time but the first obstacle was a wide load
which prevented riders from following the prescribed route to Brereton Heath,
so most riders opted to do this loop on the way home. The ride went via
Middlewich, Church Minshull, Malpas, Bangor on Dee, to the first control
at Chirk. Then it followed a stretch along the A5 towards Corwen before
crossing the valley to return towards Llangollen and the ascent of the 1367
foot Horseshoe Pass. The Mountain scenery was at its Autumn best. The return
journey was via Bwlchgwyn (the highest village in Wales), Rossett, Farndon,
Beeston and Church Minshull. The ride finished at the Swan pub in Holmes Chapel
where soup and a well earned drink were savoured.
