Congleton’s
Denise Hurst is crowned National VTTA Lady Champion at 50-miles
Last
Saturday (23rd), six Club Members competed in the Club’s own Open
50-mile Time Trial, which incorporated the VTTA National Championship
(for Veteran’s – over 40 years). Denise Hurst, in only her second year of
racing, was a clear victor of this age-related competition with a fine actual
time of 2 hours 21 minutes and 33 seconds. The lady riders have a well
established allowance compared to the men but she beat all our men who recorded
the following actual times: Neil Skellern – 01:57:26, Karl Austin – 02:11:55,
Edgar Reynolds – 02:20:48, Peter Hayhurst – 02:35:31. Tony Elliott broke his
handlebars and was not able to complete the event. Pete Nelson did an excellent
job as the event organiser but was thus unable to ride. He was well supported
by a team of 12 Club Members at the HQ and at the various marshalling
positions. The event was disrupted by temporary traffic lights near Twemlow so
the Start Time was delayed by almost 2 hours, by which time the sun had
disappeared and the rain commenced just as the riders were on their 2nd
or 3rd laps of the Chelford / Knutsford circuit.
The Club’s
weekly Time Trials were concluded on Tuesday 12th August with a 10-miler
on the Holmes Chapel course. The fastest Congleton rider was Karl Austin in 25
minutes and 43 seconds, followed by Tony Elliott with 26:22, Steve Sladin with
28:01, Pete Nelson with 29:06, followed by David Hurst with 38.05 (due to going
off-course and making a 3 mile detour via Arclid!). The leader board, with only
the Hill Climb (in October) remaining, shows Karl Austin with 165 points, Tony
Elliot with 159 points, Pete Nelson with 104 and then Brendan McLaughlin with
98 points.
