Congleton Cycling Club

Variety is the spice…

On Sunday, 25th May, Denise Hurst, Doug Taylor and Bob Norton , Pete Nelson and Rob Waghorn, endured wet but warm conditions in a repeat of the Club’s 100-mile Reliability Ride through Staffordshire, Shropshire and back through Cheshire.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Neil Skellern and Karl Austin flew the club colours in the Anfield 100-mile T.T. in very windy conditions on the Shropshire course. They recorded 4hrs 9 minutes and 4hrs 28 minutes for 4th and 11th places, respectively.

Last weekend, Karl Austin and Peter Nelson travelled to Worcestershire to ride the Shirley Roads Club 50 mile T.T. Karl finished in 2hrs 3 mins and Peter clocked 2 hrs 24 mins.

The Club’s weekly 10-mile Time Trials continued on Tuesday 27th May with only 7 riders. The fastest Congleton rider was Karl Austin (as usual) in 23 minutes 45 seconds, followed by Brendan McLaughlin  with 24:06 and Tony Elliott with 24:58. This small turnout was partly due to the VTTA 30-mile Time Trial held in the afternoon on the Cranage – Chelford circuit where Pete Nelson recorded an excellent 1hr 23 mins and Peter Hayhurst (the Event Organiser) a mediocre 1hr 30 mins. Four Club Members did 50% of the marshalling: Denise Hurst, Rob Waghorn, Bob Norton and John Harrison.

Last weekend saw five lady members participating in the Ladies National Cycling Weekend. Jean Shaw, Denise Hurst, Georgina Norton, Mary Renshaw and Angela Taylor rode on Saturday to Hill’s at Allostock then to Holland’s at North Rode and back home. Altogether 20 ladies participated in this very social ride which had the main objective of introducing newcomers to cycle touring. At last, everyone enjoyed the warm and dry conditions.

On Sunday, Denise Hurst and Lynne Skellern joined a group of 8 ladies for the ride to Tattenhall and back covering about 55 miles. The rain returned, but one of the ladies got wetter than anticipated when she crashed into a stream near Vale Royal Abbey Thankfully she was unhurt and grateful to Lynne, for helping her out of the water
