Congleton Cycling Club

The Short and the Long of it ….

The Club’s weekly 10-mile Time Trials continued last Tuesday but this event was held on the Chelford course, with 17 riders, including 6 from Leek C.C. The fastest Congleton rider was Karl Austin (as usual) in 23 minutes 46 seconds, followed by Tony Elliott with 25:19, Andy Malbon in 25:26, followed by Pete Nelson, Roy Hayhurst, Dave Butterworth, Peter Hayhurst and Steve Sladin, all between 27:33 and 28:18.

Rob Waghorn rode his 11th and longest AUDAX of 2008. Over the weekend of 11th May, he successfully completed a 400k, the Plains, from Poynton. The weather was mainly warm and dry which made for comfortable riding during the night.

Denise Hurst and Bob Norton, were among the 60 who endured the cold and wet conditions in the 200k Tour of the Berwyns last Saturday from Willington Hall to Holt, Minera and over World’s End to Corwen then over the Milltir Cerrig to Llangynog and up and along the Berwyn Range and down to Chirk, returning to Willington via Bangor-on-Dee, Malpas and Burwardsley.

Also last Saturday, 5 members rode the Stone Wheelers “25” in breezy, dry, cool conditions on the Uttoxeter course. Neil Skellern recorded 53:43, Karl Austin 57:22, Peter Hayhurst 1:06:01, Pete Nelson 1:06:45 and Lynne Skellern 1:07:20.

On Sunday, Karl Austin also flew the club colours in the 50-mile T.T. on the Bassenthwaite - Keswick course in Cumbria, putting in his fastest performance of this year in recording 2 hours 2 minutes.
