Congleton
Cycling Club
Club
Time Trial Season starts with Hilly Cracker
The Club’s weekly
Time Trials commenced last Tuesday with the annual Hilly 10-mile on the tough
Blacky Bank / Bridestones / Rushton / Wood Treatment Works / Timbersbrook /
Coach & Horses circuit. Twelve riders exerted themselves and although held in
clear, dry, sunny conditions, it was made tougher than usual due to the cold
air. This was indicated by two large gritting trucks in action, one of which
caused two of the riders to slow to a following pace on a downhill section whilst
chewing the salty grit! The fastest Congleton rider was Karl Austin in 32
minutes 50 seconds, followed by Brendan McGloughlan, Tony Elliott and Andy
Malbon in 34 to 35 minutes. Steve Sladin achieved 40 minutes on his mountain
bike.
Lynne and
Neil Skellern, Karl Austin, John Harrison, Peter Hayhurst and Peter Nelson have
ridden more local 10-mile and 25-mile Time Trials. Karl Austin also rode the
tough Wrexham Hilly Time Trial which included two ascents of the Horseshoe
Pass. Last Saturday, in the M&D 25 based on Goostrey and in very windy
conditions, Neil Skellern and Karl Austin demonstrated their high level of
fitness with 59 and 60 minutes respectively. The two Peters were more-or-less
satisfied with their 74 minute times.
Rob Waghorn
completed his 10th AUDAX ride of this year. His latest was his first 300k of
2008, the Heart of England.
