Congleton
Cycling Club
On Saturday, 5th January,
the Club’s top rider, Neil Skellern, received his award for 10th
place in the British Best All-Rounder (BAR) competition at The Champions Night
in Nottingham. This is the 4th successive year that Neil has received
this top-12 award which included all-expenses-paid for him and his wife, Lynne.
Also on the 5th January, Rob
Waghorn rode his first AUDAX of 2008; The Hopey (Happy) 100 (km) from Hope
(near Castleton) via Hathersage, Bakewell, Matlock, Ashbourne, Waterhouses,
Longnor, Chelmorton, Tideswell and back to Hope. Rob and the other 50 riders
enjoyed sunny, clear weather for this hilly route which proves very tough
considering the rather low fitness levels at this early point in the season.
The first
of Congleton C.C.'s 2008 Reliability Trials took place on Sunday 13th Jan. The
idea of Reliability Trials is to ride a set route within specified target times.
This first event was 49 miles, with the objective of completing the route in
between 2.75 and 4 hours (12.5 to 18 mph). For 2008 all the clubs reliability
routes have been redesigned by Karl Austin, to use lanes and minor roads,
avoiding the A roads as much as possible. Sunday’s ride took the riders via
Bosley, Gawsworth, Broken Cross, Alderley Edge, Ollerton, Middlewich,
Warmingham, Maw Green and Haslington; returning to Congleton via Hassall Green,
Smallwood and Astbury. A damp and windy day faced the 29 riders leaving the
Rugby Club at 9 o’clock. Riders from Leek C.C. and Macclesfield Wheelers joined
our Congleton C.C. members. The main group quickly split up on the climb
up through Buglawton, with riders forming smaller groups for the rest of the
ride. All completed the route at the required speed.
