Congleton Cycling Club – Splendid Rides in Bad Conditions for Cyclists

02/06/12 Glentress 7 – 7 hour MTB Enduro Race

Jamie Willets reports: “Based on a mixture of the existing trail centre trails and fresh cut single-track through the woods it made for a fun but technical ride. The course involved a LOT of climbing with about 1200ft of climbing per 6.5 mile lap. I was glad that I had brought my climbing legs with me, as the course was using several red and one black graded section, in reverse. Climbing these technical sections wasn’t quite as much fun as descending them would have been! I was struggling with some of the descending and losing a significant amount of time on the final descent of the lap – an off camber rooty section which on the first lap had a distinct smell of overheating brake pads by the bottom. Overall I was happy with my finishing result – 35th out of 134 solos.”

06/06/12 TLI Oulton Park Series, Race 1

Here is Mike Line’s report of his criterium race: “Arriving at Oulton Park the weather was not ideal for my first circuit race. Due to the large entry of 150 riders, two events were run, each of 32 miles. The circuit was very lumpy with an uphill sprint to the finish. When I arrived it was pouring it down with rain but fortunately it eased off and parts of it began to dry out just before the race started. With the race being run by TLI there was a wide range of abilities in the under 50′s, from beginners right up to elite riders, this meant the pace was kept very high for the entire race. Ryan Mullen of Planet X led a break off the front and managed to stay away for most of the race until just at the end when Martin Ford of In-Gear RT took the win. I managed to finish mid peloton which I was quite happy with for my first try. This was a good, well run race and I am lookjng forward to the next one.”

Weekend of 7th to 10th June

Club “Come-And-Try-It” 2.5 mile TT on Brereton Heath Circuit

On Thursday Evening June 7th, the club promoted a Come and Try It Time Trial at Brereton Heath. The event was supported by Team Congleton and was part of the towns Olympic Celebrations. The course was a 2.5 mile circuit based at Brereton Heath Country Park.
Despite very wet and windy conditions, three Gold Medals were presented.
Bethany Eardley took Gold in the U18 girl’s category in 8 minutes and 10 seconds.
Adam Burgess took Gold in the U18 boy’s category in 9:12.
James Cardwell took Gold in the U15 boy’s category in 9:17.
These were splendid rides in bad conditions. Club chairman Bob Norton thanks all the helpers and the riders and said we will look at repeating the event later in the “summer”

Congleton Peddlers in It’s A Knockout Competition and Cycle Skills Event

As reported in last week’s Chronicle, the Club had a team in Team Congleton’s Olympic Celebration “It’s a Knockout” Competition in Congleton Park. The team of Kate and Dave Mulroy, Andy Malbon, Wayne Powell (team captain), Mary Renshaw, Edgar Reynolds, and Rob and Mandy Sharrock had a great time and acquitted themselves very well by finishing 4th in their heat. The competition was based on the popular TV game show which did come to Congleton in 1973. Team manager, Georgina Norton, said “They literally threw themselves into the knockout competition. They were wonderful.”

The club also ran a cycle skills event for youngsters led by our new trainee coach, Denise Hurst, assisted by David Hurst and Bob Norton.

VTTA 50-mile TT on Chelford Course

Riders and Helpers were relieved to experience good, if cool, conditions. Two Members were satisfied with their performances; Wayne Powell recording 02:23:57 and Peter Nelson, 02:45:15, which placed him 1st in the Over-70 Category! The winner was Charles Taylor, South Pennine C.C. with a very fast 01:50:48. The event was organised by Peter Hayhurst, supported by 22 Officials / Helpers, including Club Members, Roy Hayhurst and Kelvin Milward.

Club 10-mile TT on Gawsworth Course on 12th June

Steve Hulme was fastest of the field of 20 riders with a time of 22:46. Keith Dutton (Wills Wheels) was second with 23:26. Two new riders deserve special mention: Nick Dekker riding in his first ever race recorded the superb time of 23:55, and junior Bethany Eardley riding her mountain bike recorded a time of 33:00 (which is almost exactly four times her winning time in the 2.5 mile Come and Try It Time Trial last week!). Her Mum & Dad are both cyclists and over the last 4 years as a family they have completed a Coast to Coast ride each year. We are eager to see what she achieves when she rides a road bike in her next time trial.
